Healthy Choices Make Healthy Communities

Healthy Communities

A healthy community is one where every person has access to the care, resources, and support they need to live a full and healthy life. At United Way of Northwest Florida, we work to improve health outcomes by addressing both immediate needs and the underlying conditions that impact physical, mental, and emotional well being.

Health is about more than medical care. It is influenced by where we live, work, learn, and age. Through collaboration and strategic investment, United Way strengthens systems that support overall wellness and helps remove barriers that prevent individuals and families from thriving.

UWNWFL

United Way of Northwest Florida takes a comprehensive and community driven approach to health. We bring together nonprofits, health care providers, schools, businesses, and public agencies to identify local health challenges and implement solutions that create lasting change.

Investing in Local Solutions

United Way strategically funds programs that improve access to essential health services and promote prevention and early intervention. This includes support for initiatives focused on physical health, mental health, substance use prevention, food security, and access to care for vulnerable populations.

Rooted in Holmes: A Food Security Initiative

In Holmes County, United Way of Northwest Florida is leading Rooted in Holmes, a food security initiative funded by the Florida Blue Foundation. In partnership with DaySpring Outreach Ministries and local farm, workforce, and community partners, the program combines hands-on agricultural workforce training with food distribution and ongoing education in nutrition, gardening, and food preparation, building a sustainable, local source of fresh food while creating job skills and opportunity for county residents.

Play It Forward

Regular physical activity is one of the most powerful tools for a child's long term health. Kids in organized sports have lower rates of overweight and obesity than kids who don't play, and research shows active youth are two to three times more likely to stay active as adults. Sports participation also supports mental health, helping reduce anxiety and depression and build emotional resilience. Our annual Play It Forward event provides free, good quality sports gear, collected from the community and purchased with sponsorship dollars, so every child in our region has the chance to build these lifelong healthy habits. Donate gently used equipment, sponsor the event, or volunteer with us day of!

Community Health Fair

Each year, we partner with our local Affiliated Agencies, health organizations and community partners to host a health fair, connecting residents with screenings, resources, and information to help them take charge of their health.

UWNWFLStrengthening Community Systems

Lasting health outcomes require strong systems. United Way works to improve coordination across the health and human services network, helping partners work more effectively together and ensuring individuals can access the right support at the right time. By leveraging data, listening to local voices, and mobilizing resources, we adapt our work to meet evolving conditions and strengthen community resilience.

Advancing Health Equity

We prioritize efforts that reduce disparities and ensure everyone has the opportunity to achieve good health, regardless of income, zip code, age, or background. By addressing social and economic factors that impact health, United Way helps build a more equitable and resilient Northwest Florida.

Our Commitment

Healthy communities are essential to a strong Northwest Florida. Through strategic partnerships, targeted community investment, and data informed decision making, United Way of Northwest Florida is strengthening the systems that support health and well being across our region. We work alongside nonprofit partners, health care providers, public agencies, and community leaders to improve access to care, promote prevention and early intervention, and address the social factors that influence health outcomes. By aligning resources and focusing on evidence based solutions, United Way helps ensure individuals and families can get the support they need when and where it matters most. Our work is guided by local data and community voice, allowing us to respond to emerging needs while driving long term improvements in health equity, stability, and resilience. Together, we are building healthier communities where people can live with dignity, stability, and hope.
