Youth Opportunity
Every child deserves a fair shot at reaching their full potential, no matter their zip code or their family's income. United Way of Northwest Florida invests in kids from their earliest years through the moments that shape their futures, because a strong start opens the door to everything that comes after: graduating on time, landing a good job, and building a stable life.
The Challenge
Reading on grade level by third grade is one of the strongest predictors of future success, and too many of our kids are starting behind. Statewide, 43% of third graders are not reading on grade level, which adds up to more than 94,000 students who haven't reached that critical milestone right before the shift from learning to read to reading to learn. That gap doesn't close on its own, and it follows kids well past elementary school.
Investing in Local Solutions
Beyond our own direct programs, United Way strategically funds affiliated partner agencies working to expand opportunity for youth across our region. Through our Community Impact Fund, we support organizations focused on mentoring, out of school time programming, and early childhood development, helping strengthen the broader network of support that gives local kids a path forward.
ReadingPals
ReadingPals is our flagship youth opportunity program. It's a statewide early literacy initiative that connects volunteer mentors with students from Pre-K through third grade who need a little extra support, building literacy skills, confidence, and a lifelong love of reading through one on one and small group time. In Bay and Washington counties, volunteers spend about an hour a week with students in local public schools and Head Start centers, and every participating student takes home new books throughout the year. Stuff the Bus
A strong school year starts with the right tools. Each summer, we partner with school districts across all six counties, along with local businesses and volunteers, to collect and distribute school supplies so every student walks into their first day ready to learn, and teachers, who spend an average of $750 or more of their own money on classroom supplies every year, don't have to shoulder that cost alone.

Play It Forward
High equipment costs keep too many kids out of sports they love. Our annual Play it Forward event, held each spring, connects families with free, good quality gear collected from the community and brand new equipment purchased with sponsorship dollars, so cost is never the reason a child sits on the sidelines. Join us in our mission to remove expense as a barrier to play; donate gently used equipment, sponsor the event, or volunteer with us day of!

Our Approach
Youth opportunity is one of our four community focus areas, alongside health, resilience, and financial security. We believe kids do best when their whole community shows up for them, families, schools, volunteers, and neighbors alike, so we focus on the moments where a little extra support makes the biggest difference: learning to read, starting the school year prepared, and having the chance to play.
